Lactate test analysis for runners

Calculate LT1, LT2 and pace zones precisely, whether your step test is on a treadmill or track.

Lactate threshold is one of the most useful performance markers for endurance runners. It informs marathon pace, training ranges and metabolic efficiency.

What is lactate threshold in running?

In running, lactate threshold is the pace where lactate production and clearance are still balanced. Above it, lactate accumulates and pace has to drop.

LT1 โ€” Aerobic threshold

LT1 is your easy aerobic boundary. It helps keep easy runs easy and defines the upper end of true base endurance.

LT2 โ€” Anaerobic threshold

LT2 is close to threshold race intensity. Marathon pace is usually below LT2, while 10 km and half-marathon pace often sit near or above it.

Typical lactate values for runners

LT1 (aerob)
about 5:30-6:30 min/km for trained recreational runners
LT2 (anaerob)
about 4:00-5:00 min/km for trained recreational runners
VLamax
0.3-0.5 mmol/L/s for endurance runners

Race pacing for runners

Use your lactate values to estimate marathon, half-marathon and 10 km pacing from your own data instead of a generic table.

Training zones for runners

Zone 1 โ€” Recovery
below LT1

Recovery runs with minimal lactate accumulation.

Zone 2 โ€” Endurance
LT1 to ~80% LT2

Long runs and aerobic base building.

Zone 3 โ€” Tempo
around LT2

Tempo runs and marathon-specific work.

Zone 4 โ€” Threshold
LT2 to 105% LT2

10 km to half-marathon intensity, high but limited duration.

Zone 5 โ€” VO2max
above LT2

Intervals and 5 km pace, maximal aerobic capacity work.

Frequently asked questions โ€” lactate test for runners

How do I run a step test for running?

Start at an easy pace and increase every 3-5 minutes by about 20-30 seconds per kilometer. Measure lactate at the end of each stage and enter the values in LactateThreshold.

What is a good LT2 value for runners?

It depends on performance level. Development over time is more important than comparing one absolute pace with other athletes.

How is LT2 related to marathon pace?

For well-trained runners, marathon pace is usually slightly below LT2 and must also consider durability, fueling and current fitness.

Which lactate meter is useful for runners?

Lactate Scout, Lactate Pro 2, Lactate Plus and Lactate Express all work as long as they report mmol/L values.

How often should runners do a lactate test?

Two to three tests per year are typical: early base phase, race preparation and after a recovery period.
